Background of the Study
Cultural sensitivity refers to the awareness, understanding, and respect for the differences in culture, values, and customs between people of different backgrounds. In the context of tourism, cultural sensitivity plays a crucial role in shaping foreign tourists' experiences. Niger State, located in Nigeria, is home to rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and natural resources, making it a potential hub for international tourism. However, the interaction between foreign tourists and local communities can be influenced by cultural differences, which, if not managed sensitively, can result in misunderstandings, discomfort, or negative experiences for tourists.
Cultural sensitivity in tourism encompasses various aspects, such as respecting local traditions, practices, and languages, as well as ensuring that tourists’ interactions with locals and services are culturally appropriate. For foreign tourists visiting Niger State, it is important for tourism providers, hotel staff, guides, and the local community to be aware of these cultural nuances. Enhancing cultural sensitivity can improve tourists' experiences, lead to greater satisfaction, and foster positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
This study aims to assess the impact of cultural sensitivity on the experiences of foreign tourists visiting Niger State, exploring how culturally aware practices can improve or hinder tourists' overall perceptions of the destination.
Statement of the Problem
While Niger State has much to offer in terms of natural beauty and cultural heritage, there have been limited studies examining the role of cultural sensitivity in enhancing tourists' experiences. Foreign tourists, particularly those from cultures distinct from Nigeria’s, may face challenges in navigating local customs and practices, potentially leading to negative experiences or dissatisfaction. This study seeks to understand the significance of cultural sensitivity in tourism and how it impacts foreign tourists’ experiences in Niger State, with the goal of providing recommendations for improving cultural interactions.
